Operations on Sets

The mathematical concept of a set is very like that of a set container – it’s a collection of things that are alike in some way. There are binary operations on sets defined that combine the contents of two sets in various ways to produce another set. Figure 5-6 illustrates these, and shows the following: Two examples of sets A and B that contain integers.

The union of the sets A and B is the set of elements that belongs to either or both sets.

The intersection of the sets A and B is the set of elements that are common to both.
